Blog

Write, preview, and publish blog posts, add tables, link to a section, credit an author, hide a post, and edit the blog's landing page.

Blog posts appear at www.roofingboss.ai/blog, newest first, and each post has its own page. You write them in the Studio under Posts. Anyone invited to the Studio can publish.

Each post page starts with a breadcrumb trail, Home, Blog, then the post's title, so a reader can go back to the blog or the homepage.

After the post's Body, every post shows More from the blog (other posts to read next) and then Start with your address: the homepage's address bar, so a reader who finishes a post can start a quote right there. The blog page itself also ends with Start with your address. Neither is edited in the Studio, so don't add your own "get a quote" box or reading list at the end of a post.

Write a post

  1. In the Studio, select Posts.
  2. Click the create button (pencil icon) at the top of the list.
  3. Fill in the fields below. Title, Slug, Author, and Image are required.
  4. Click Publish.
FieldWhat it does
TitleThe headline.
DescriptionA short summary for the post's card and for search results. Aim for 140 to 160 characters; the Studio warns you outside that range.
SlugThe post's web address, /blog/ followed by the slug. Click Generate to make it from the title. See Set a slug.
AuthorPick exactly one author.
Published AtThe date shown on the post. It also sets the post's place in the list. It starts as today.
Feature this postShows the post in a large card at the top of the blog. If several posts are featured, the newest one gets the card.
CategoryMaintenance, Guides, Pricing, Storm Damage, or News. Shown as a label on the post and its card, and used to pick the posts under More from the blog.
ImageThe photo at the top of the post and on its card. Add Alt Text.
BodyThe post itself, including any tables.

Changing the Slug of a published post changes its web address once you publish. Links to the old address, including ones already shared and the ones search engines know, stop working. While the slug differs from the published one, the Studio warns you and shows the old address, so you can change it back.

Format the body

The Body field has a toolbar:

  • Normal, H2, H3, H4, and Quote set the style of a paragraph. Start main sections with H2 and the parts inside them with H3. Both become sections readers can link to; see Link to a section.
  • Bullet and Numbered make lists.
  • Strong, Emphasis, and Code format selected words.
  • Link turns selected words into a link. Enter a URL: a full web address starting with https://, or a path on this site such as /blog/storm-tips. Turn on Open in new tab if you want it to open separately. See Add a link for what the Studio accepts.
  • An image block adds a photo inside the post, with Alt text and an optional Caption. The Studio warns you about a photo without Alt text.
  • Insert Table adds a table. See Add a table.

Add a table

Use a table for side-by-side comparisons, such as roofing materials by lifespan and cost. Tables work in blog posts only, not in community events or project spotlights.

  1. In the Body, put your cursor where the table goes.
  2. Click Insert Table (the grid icon) in the toolbar. You get three rows and three columns, and the top row is the header row.
  3. Type into the cells. Press Tab to move to the next cell and Shift + Tab to go back.
  4. Click Publish.

To change the table, hover over it:

  • Add row at end and Add column at end run along the bottom and right edges. The dots between rows and columns turn into Insert here buttons that add one in that spot.
  • Click a Row handle or Column handle to select that row or column, then use Delete row or Delete column. Drag a handle to move the row or column.
  • Table options, at the table's top-right corner, has the Header row switch, Select table, and Delete table.

A cell holds plain text with Strong, Emphasis, and Link. Headings, lists, and images can't go in a cell.

On the site, the header row shows as bold column headings. On a phone, a table too wide for the screen scrolls sideways inside its box, so the rest of the post stays put. A table has no title or caption of its own, so introduce it with a heading or a sentence just above it, like "Shingles and metal at a glance".

The Studio checks each table:

  • It needs at least 2 rows and 2 columns. You can't publish the post until it has them, or until you delete the table.
  • It warns about a table wider than 8 columns or longer than 40 rows, which is hard to read on a phone. Split it into smaller tables.
  • It warns about a table with no text, which the site leaves out, and about rows with fewer cells than the others, which the site fills with empty cells.

If Insert Table isn't in the Body toolbar, your Studio hasn't been updated to the version with tables yet. Ask an admin.

Every H2 and H3 heading in the Body is a section with its own link.

  • Hover over a heading, or reach it with the Tab key, and a link icon appears next to it. On a phone the icon is always there. Copy that link to send someone straight to the section.
  • The link is the post's address, then # and the heading's words, such as /blog/storm-tips#check-the-attic. Two headings with the same words get -2, -3, and so on at the end.
  • Rewording a heading changes its link. A link to the old wording still opens the post, at the top.
  • H4 headings have no link.

A post with three or more H2 and H3 headings also gets an In this post box above the body. It lists the headings in order, with each H3 under its H2, and each one jumps to its section. Shorter posts don't get the box.

Choose what readers see next

More from the blog shows up to three other posts. Posts with the same Category come first, and the newest posts fill the rest. To steer the suggestions, give each post the right Category.

  • A post with Hide From Lists or Do Not Index This Page turned on is never suggested.
  • The suggestions always show the published version of each post, in Presentation too.
  • When there's no other post to suggest, the section is left out.

Preview and publish changes

Edits to a published post stay a draft until you click Publish again, so visitors keep seeing the last published version. To see a draft on the real page first, open it in Presentation. See Preview a page before you publish.

Hide or remove a post

All of these are on the post's SEO tab, except Unpublish. The Posts list shows "Hidden from blog list" or "Marked noindex" under a post with Hide From Lists or Do Not Index This Page turned on.

  • Hide From Lists takes the post off the blog list and out of More from the blog. Its own link still works, so you can still share it.
  • Do Not Index This Page keeps search engines from listing the post. It also keeps the post out of More from the blog.
  • SEO Meta Title Override and SEO Meta Description Override change how the post looks in search results without changing the page.
  • To take a post off the site completely, open the menu next to Publish and choose Unpublish. The post stays in the Studio, so you can publish it again later.

Manage authors

Every post is credited to one author. To add or edit one, select Authors.

FieldWhat it does
NameThe author's full name. Required.
PositionTheir job title, such as "Owner".
ImageTheir photo.
BioA short paragraph about them.
Show on the team pagePuts them on the team page. Turn it on only after they've agreed to appear there. Starts off. See Put someone on the team page.

Each post shows an author card with the name, position, photo, and bio, and search engines are given the same details for the post's author. Click Publish after editing an author.

Edit the blog landing page

Select Blog landing to change the Title and Description at the top of the blog. Its SEO tab changes the title and description search results show. Click Publish when you're done.
