Add or edit a product
Create a product or change its name, units, costs, and prices, using target gross margin or markup to set the price.
Add a product with Sidebar → Estimating → Products → Add Product. To edit one, open the ⋯ menu on its row and choose Edit. Changes are saved to JobNimbus, so new estimates and work orders use them right away.
Fill in the product
- Enter a Name* (up to 32 characters).
- Choose the Item Type*: Material, Labor, or Labor + Material.
- Optional: add a Description.
- Choose the Location* the product belongs to.
- Leave Active Status on unless you're retiring the product. Turn on Tax Exempt if it isn't taxed.
- Set up at least one unit of measurement (see below).
- Click Create Product for a new product, or Save Changes.
Turning off Active Status hides the product from every list and search. You can only find it again by its product ID.
Set units, costs, and prices
Under Units of Measurement, each unit (UOM #1, UOM #2, …) has its own pricing.
- Choose the Unit Name*. The list comes from your account's units of measurement; an admin manages them under Settings → Units of Measurement. See Settings.
- Under Material, enter the Cost (what you pay) and Price (what you charge).
- Under Labor, enter the labor Cost and Price if the product includes labor.
Click Add UOM to price the product in another unit, such as per square and per bundle. Click Remove to delete a unit. A product always keeps at least one.
Estimates and work orders use the first unit's prices when you pick the product.
Price from a target margin or markup
Under each Material and Labor block, roofingBoss shows the Gross Margin and Markup for the cost and price you entered. You can also work backward: set the margin or markup you want, and roofingBoss sets the price.
- Gross Margin is profit as a share of the price. A $60 cost at 40% gross margin gives a $100 price.
- Markup is profit as a share of the cost. A $60 cost at 50% markup gives a $90 price.
To set a target:
- Drag the slider under Gross Margin: or Markup:. The Price updates as you drag.
- Or double-click the percentage, type a value, and press Enter. Press Esc to cancel.
The cost doesn't change, only the price. Enter a cost greater than 0 first; until then the sliders are grayed out. The gross margin slider runs from −90% to 95% and the markup slider from −90% to 300%. A negative figure shows in red, meaning the price is below cost.
The Gross Margin and Markup columns on the Products page use the same math on the first unit: its labor figures for a labor product, its material figures otherwise. See Products.
